Lyrics

I Am A Baby Northern Fur Seal

I am a baby northern fur seal, and I was born to dive.
My mother feeds me rich, warm milk that helps me to survive.
My life is split between two worlds; on land and in the water.
That’s why my nostrils open wide then shut tight like an otter.

Like many other pinnipeds I’m clumsy on the shore.
But, I can swim with speed and grace and it is not a chore.
My flippers help me run and climb; true seals mostly just steer
With stubby fin-like flippers in the front and in the rear.

(Spoken)  You wanna see me dive??

Swirling and twirling and spinning around on my way to the bottom
Eating salmon, herring, pollack, and squid ‘cuz the Bering Sea has got ‘em.

My mother is quite pretty and some think I’m real cute.
If she sees that danger is near my dad gives them the boot!
He’s five times bigger than my mom and he always looks ferocious.
If he were someone else’s dad I’d think he was atrocious.

I live in water half of the year but when I live on land
I still dive for fun, I dive for food; I think the water’s grand.
It should come as no surprise because I’m my mother’s daughter
That I sleep on my back with my flapped feet sticking out of the water.

(Spoken)  You wanna see me dive again?
Swirling and twirling and spinning around on my way to the bottom
Eating salmon, herring, pollack, and squid ‘cuz the Bering Sea has got ‘em.

All my friends and family have tiny, little ears.
Eight related species live in the southern hemisphere.
Our fur is super glorious; it’s known throughout the land!
We once were sought by dandies and dames who thought they were so grand.
Then views on northern fur seals changed, I’m certain we will thrive.
Come visit me in the Pribilofs and I’ll show you how I dive!

(Spoken) Because that’s what I do really well.
